Rick van Lieshout
Rick van Lieshout
CTO · Software Architect · Engineering Leader

CTO, software architect and engineering leader with a passion for building both software and the teams behind it. Experienced in growing engineering organisations, defining technical strategy and delivering business-critical platforms from concept to production.

My background combines hands-on software engineering with leadership, allowing me to operate comfortably at both strategic and technical levels. I enjoy solving complex organisational and architectural challenges, coaching engineers and leaders, and creating environments where people can do their best work.

Strong believer in pragmatic engineering, continuous improvement and technology as a means to solve business problems rather than an end goal in itself.

Work experience

Chief Technology Officer CTO since 2023 · Frontliners since 2016

Frontliners (INFORIT)

As CTO of Frontliners, I am responsible for technical strategy, software architecture and engineering leadership across the organisation.

One of the key initiatives during my tenure has been the transition from a legacy platform with significant scalability and maintainability challenges to a modern cloud-native architecture built around Kubernetes, event-driven systems and domain-driven design principles. The platform is currently being rolled out internationally as the next-generation Transport Management System (TFX) for the Royal Den Hartogh organisation.

Alongside the technical transformation, I have helped grow the engineering organisation from a small team of 5 developers working on a single product into multiple specialised teams covering product development, platform engineering and business integrations. Today, the engineering organisation consists of more than 30 engineers working across several disciplines.

The platform and architecture have undergone multiple external & independent technical reviews, reinforcing confidence in the long-term architectural direction while helping guide continuous improvement efforts.

Selected responsibilities

  • Technical strategy and architecture
  • Engineering leadership and organisational growth
  • Hiring, coaching and mentoring engineers and leaders
  • Platform modernisation and cloud adoption
  • Security, operational excellence and software quality

Key technologies

.NET, TypeScript, React, Kubernetes, Kafka, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, Supabase, ArgoCD, Terraform, Vault and Keycloak

Research & Applied Machine Learning (side initiative) 2019

Alongside my role as CTO, I contributed to a research initiative focused on antisense oligonucleotide therapy. The work involved applying machine learning and data-analysis techniques to biological datasets, exploring predictive modelling and sequence-related analysis using Python and Scala.

The project was conducted in collaboration with external researchers and focused on investigating how modern AI/ML techniques could support future developments in antisense therapy and bioinformatics-related research.

Solidwinds developer 2015 - 2016

Set up an architecture and started implementation for a scalable metrics collection system for windmill location scouting.

This involved collecting data from windmill sensor towers on old IOT-scale equipment, aggregating the results to prove that the chosen location was profitable and sustainable enough to place a proper windmill.

Open-source aficionado Always

A significant portion of my personal work is published as open source. I enjoy building tools, experimenting with new technologies and sharing solutions with the wider community. Most projects can be found on Github, ranging from developer tooling to full applications and infrastructure-related work.

Hanflex employee September 2015 - July 2018

HAN - Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen

Supported HAN University of Applied Sciences through teaching, demonstrations and student-facing events.

Activities included introducing prospective students to software engineering and emerging technologies, as well as teaching introductory classes covering Java, .NET, PostgreSQL and professional English.

Founder & Freelance Developer 2006 - January 2019

Long before entering the professional software industry, I spent much of my free time building websites, software and technical solutions for individuals, local organisations and small businesses.

Projects ranged from website development and custom software to hardware troubleshooting, network installations and general IT consulting. While many of these projects were relatively small in scope, they provided valuable early experience in customer communication, requirements gathering, solution design and long-term maintenance.

Several solutions remained in active use for years and were either maintained personally or successfully handed over to external parties. Looking back, this period laid the foundation for my later interests in software architecture, engineering leadership and building sustainable technical solutions.

Education

HBO ICT / software engineering 2014 - 2018

HAN — Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen

I enrolled in college to obtain my software engineering degree. I finished my first year with an average of 8.3/10 and graduated in 2018 with an average of 8/10 again.

Graduate internship February 2018 - June 2018

VAA ICT Consultancy

Building an interactive and fully customizable dashboard on top of VAA’s existing product lineup. The dashboard was built with ReactJS backed by an Express back-end-for-front-end.

The dashboard itself enabled detailed insight into the vastly complex agriculture world customizable by and for each of VAA’s customers.
